Simon Wake Comrie Relay

The Westies once again entered a team in the Simon Wake Comrie relay, which winds up and down the hills around Glen Lednock. Our hopes of entering a team consisting exclusively of John’s was scuppered when it transpired that neither Sarah nor Gregor answer to “John”, and in any event the organisers had not provided an all-John category for us to enter. The weather was benign, warm with a covering of cloud. Leg 1 was ably completed in just over an hour by John Quinn. The baton (or, rather, stamp card) passed to John McInally and myself for the technical section over Crappich hill. After a sharp climb, we were rewarded with excellent views over the glen followed by a cracking descent to the final mile of road. Just before the car parking area, a young girl in ponytails started winding up to a sprint finish, and I immediately jumped to the challenge — only to find the change over was another kilometre down the road! Our anchorman, Gregor, ran leg 3 in somewhat challenging conditions as the clag descended, but still put in an excellent time of 1h21. We missed the cutoff for the mass-start on leg 4 by ten minutes, so Sarah got to head off early. Motivated by the thought of lamb burgers and cake at the finish, she put in a great run, surprising us all with our only sub-60 leg of the day. I believe I speak for everyone in saying this was a great day out, full of excellent hill and trail running and all the usual Westies camaraderie. Let’s hope we can get a couple of teams together next year!
