So I guess I’ll get the Westies reports on the Devil’s Burdens started. I was running leg 3 but got there early to pick up race numbers and make sure the team was ready. I was also looking for a lift round to the start (kindly provided by new westie Doug). After watching the early start I headed back to the hall to relax a bit but almost immediately got told we we’re leaving… so there was a bit of a rush to get my stuff ready and head with Doug. We were dropping Christine and Paula round to the start of leg 2 first so we got a chance to see the ladies running. Ellie was on a flyer and came in 3rd but with a quick change over Christine and Paula set out in first. Claire was next in coming in about mid pack and she was quickly followed by Fiona. We then hit the road dropping Claire back to the hall and heading for the leg 3 start.
After a few minutes jogging I went scoping for news on the course. Apparently a strange golden blur was fastest on leg 1 coming in about 15s ahead of Carnethy, Shettleston and Ochils. After more scoping it turned out the blur was Gwyn who had run a stormer of a leg. Now realising that James and Steve were going to be right at the head of the field. I rushed the last of my warm up and got lined up waiting for them. First runners were spotted. Shettleston… handing over to Peter Mackie. That’s OK, I reckoned I could put 30s into him on the climb. 2nd was Ochils… about a minute down. 3rd was Carnethy… man I’d love to beat them. And then James and Steve were spotted, I was starting about 4 minutes off the leaders. Unfortunately that was the last I saw of any teams I did however see Deeside coming down the hill to hand over to Robbie Simpson and knew I would have to run fast to keep him behind me. I passed quite a few early starters but knew I hadn’t made up any place and handed over to Owen and Sam for the final still in 4th.
It looked like unless something went wrong that is where we would finish. Thankfully Robbie never caught me. Gregor finished just behind me too and I made my way back to the hall with him. Back at the hall I got to catch up with how other teams were doing. My team had finished in a fantastic 4th and had broken 2hr30 which would have won it in a lot of years!
So let’s here others peoples reports… there should be a lot of them!
