MHFS 10k

As far as I can see, I was the sole Westies runner at the mens 10k at
Bellahouston on Sunday. The usual corporate frippery was in evidence
(excitable announcer man, loud music, a long bagpipe-led walk-up to
the start line to iron out any jockeying for position, which worked
quite well really).

A front pack dominated by various Bellas led the 5000 runners out of
Bellahouston Park in good running conditions. The weather had warmed
up just a little from the previous days, and the rain held off
throughout. I found a decent pace alongside a Springburn runner and
someone in a suspiciously brown HBT-type vest, going into Pollok Park.
I had been planning to start fast and keep my pace as long as possible
(figuring that would be better than finishing with some energy left in
the tank), but sure enough as we wound round Pollok Park I lost touch
with the pack of runners in front of me. A slight rally from 8k
onwards saw me overtake two or three stragglers to finish in 29th
place, with a chip time of 36:44. The race was won comfortably in a
course record 30:26 by Wegene Tafese, who must be a bit of an enigma as a Google search doesn’t reveal much about him.

Amid complimentary Tunnocks products and yet more excitable
pronouncements from the man with the microphone afterwards, I sloped
off feeling pleased to have knocked 3 minutes off my previous 10k PB
(albeit that had been achieved on the hilly Stranraer 10k route).
