Ceres 8 Mile Road Race

Tuesday 14th August 2012

I took Brian Bonnyman’s advice and ran this terrific wee race last Tuesday; it really is as he says a “hill-runner’s road race”. Some of the hills were truly painful as I tried to stick in and keep my position on the long, demanding ascents, which were quickly followed with short sharp descents leading to further climbs. Although it’s run on open roads, traffic was minimal (I counted 3 tractors in all) and the surrounding Fife countryside, hills and coastline were beautiful antidotes to a sticky, warm evening of hilly road racing.

Not the best of times on my part (usual excuses aside) I thought the competition to be particularly strong, especially in the Vets categories, which seemed to dominate the field.

Thoroughly recommend this unusual race, which is excellently run by Fife AC – there’s a good supporting family friendly atmosphere with water at the half way point and a feed in the village hall afterwards for all runners. Plus! For this year only, Ceres 8 celebrated its 25th outing so all runners were presented with a souvenir mug. What is with these east coast clubs and their enthusiasm for race themed crockery?…
