Round Arran Relay

Trains, boats and buses: does any race involve more forms of public transport?

6 Westies ran the circumference: Bill, Cat and Muffy on the south legs, Simon, Dave and Johnston on the north legs. Star attractions included Drew and Margaret, offering great company and welcome cheers at the end, and Katie pacing Simon on his leg (he is such a slouch). Highlights of the day included Dave managing to finish his leg, which was about 1000% longer than his average weekly run, Cat’s wheels, which just stayed on, and Muffy’s infamous ability to get lost. Yes, I missed the turn up the *big* hill at Lamlash. I was called back by some runners behind me (remarkable, someone was actually behind me). In true “lost shoe in international cross country race” style I stormed back and then up the hill, fuelled by rage and shame, passing the runners who had gained by my folly. Will I ever learn? (No…)

The grand finale was Cal Mac macaroni cheese and chips. Beautiful. Rumour has it that the Turnbulls went off to ceilidh in deepest Perthshire, and Johnston clubbing down Byres Road. Ah youth. Someone others of us just managed to crawl into bed and rest weary legs and sunburnt shoulders.

Another great day on Arran.
