Nigel Barge Road Race, 8th January 2005

Net Closes in on Haddie After Another No-Show

A small contingent of Westies turned out for the 5-mile Nigel Barge at Garscube. A few hours beforehand, Blair called off with the lame excuse of a cold. Or maybe he had just looked at the gale forecast on the telly and decided not to bother? I suppose it’s to be expected that these sensitive arty types will call off prime races at the last moment. In any case it was just as well for him, as Dave was in top form and would have given him a good cuffing. Although Chris was first Westie home, Dave wasn’t too far behind and managed to beat Don for the first time this season. Where was Gibbie? At least Hamilton turned out to spectate and was honest enough to say that he wasn’t running because he “couldn’t be bothered”.

Catriona continued to show a touch of class for the women, finishing ahead of Liz, who got her usual stitch and ended up in a tussle with Ian, drawing away from him in the latter stages. Liz’s appearance means that she has now gone to the top of the Women’s League for the first time this season. Drew was last Westie in, but did manage to close the gap on Chris at the top of the men’s league.

Although it was pretty windy, we did all manage to run the race before the heavens opened.

Tremendous raffle before the prizegiving; Westies must have been the only club to go away empty handed ( perhaps because we were too mean to buy any tickets!) Computer difficulties means that there were no results available. At the time of writing there were still none available on the web.
