Helvellyn and the Dodds
A new fell race in the Lakes from Threlkeld Cricket Ground, based on a favourite training run of the legendary Kenny Stuart, who came along to follow proceedings.
The weather looked completely grim when I arrived, but by noon the cloud had largely lifted. This would no doubt be a nice race in good weather, but was quite tough in an unrelenting 100 mph crosswind.
The route was about 15 miles. Probably similar stats to Stuc a’ Chroin. I made the summit of Helvellyn in 1:33, but was feeling shattered, and the run back was tougher than the run out, so I dropped about 8 places. On the very final climb to Clough Head I was closed down by Lochaber’s Oli Blomfield, who now lives in the Lakes.
The array of cakes and sandwiches at the cricket clubhouse was easily worth double the £5 entry fee.
