Normans Law

Don, Brian and I all travelled to Fife expecting to bag some bonus summer league points for being the only Westie in the race – no such luck. After registration I realised bonus points were out of the question as the delightful weather had persuaded Steph to make her comeback – it was a choice between racing or sitting in the car, there was no prospect of bathing in the Easter sunshine.

We set off from Luthrie Farm and soon left the pungent smell of the cow shed behind as we gently climbed on a bridle path and over a few gates before turning up the steep side of Normans Law. It wasn’t a massively steep climb but I took it easy as I was finding it difficult to get into my stride. One young chap overtook me as we were reaching what appeared to be the top. Once over the crest it was clear there was still a little way to go – ‘f*** that’ the young guy shouted and started walking. I know we all think it but generally keep it to ourselves! I just kept up my steady plod and circled the cairn next to a Fife AC runner. What a bonus! There was no specified route home and Brian’s tip had been to tail a local to find the most efficient route home. And great advice it was as Martin Laing guided me to the right when most others went left. We drew past them and leap frogged a few more by cutting through a field and picking up the bridle path for the sprint home.

It was a fantastic wee race made all the better by the exceptional Fife AC soup, the fresh duck eggs we bought, and the covered parking courtesy of a hay shed. And it was particularly great to see Steph out racing again, albeit in disguise as I am still wearing her Westies vest – when are the small mens vests due in?

Well run Don and Brian – you had a great sprint finish!
