Kirkintilloch Olympians 12.5km Road Race

A quartet of Westies turned up to Kirkintilloch today for this 12.5km road race, a strange distance but a very enjoyable one.

The route was a loop of the undulating countryside just outside Kirky. It all looked lovely in the bright sunshine and we were cheered along the route by a variety of cows, sheep, farmers and spectators. It was possibly the hilliest road race I’ve ever done but this maybe gave us Westies hill runner types an advantage and may explain our later triumph -read on!

Chris as ever started right at the front and set off FAST. That was the last I saw of him but it seems he had a good run with a few racing tussles and barging thrown in for added excitement. For once I was paying attention at the start, probably because there were no other Westies women to be chatting to, and managed to get near the front. This surprising achievement was followed by more surprises as I actually managed to stay near the front and overtake people – which is a nice but all too rare feeling! The last few km were spent running as fast as I could to make sure no-one got me on a nippy sprint finish. Davie, a new Westie but one you’ll have probably noticed, put in a fine effort and was resplendent as usual in luminous attire. Andy Freer was the final Westie to receive the finishers goodie bag of Tesco value goods and a Kirky Olympians mug. He muttered something about the contents not exactly making the 12.5km of effort worthwhile! It’s a nice mug though…

Westies triumph in the prizes – we won 3rd male vet and 2nd lady. Full results will undoubtedly be provided soon by someone who was paying more attention!
