Kaim Hill 2006

Another great turnout of Westies, exactly one third of the 51 runners, on a dreich night with the hill shrouded in thick mist. The start was delayed to give late arrivals due to various road works and diversions time to get organised. The junior race set off first and seemed to be comprised of a minibus load of mini-runners from Girvan AAC. Eventually we got started and got a chance to warm up again. Along to the end of the road and up Fairlie Glen then a descent into the burn, up the other side and out onto the moor. The lower slopes were heathery but once up on the ‘easier’ upper slopes in the mist it was even heavier going – like Cort-ma Law to Leckett on a wet night. Runners returning from the trig point loomed out of the mist including Donald muttering about his turn to get lost. The markers were just at the limit of visibility so by the time I reached the top my eyes felt as if they were out on stalks. Round the trig and back onto the heavy ground with only Rosie behind me then thankfully out of the mist and back down to the burn. I thought I was comfortably second last as I came down the glen path until Rosie streaked past. She must have been getting downhill coaching from demon descender Des. Oh well, last again but I got under the hour so was happy with that on a dreich night and heavy running conditions. Not surprisingly with such a big representation Westies scooped loads of prizes. Nigel was 2nd, David 3rd and 1st vet, Mindy 3rd supervet, Helen P 2nd female, Donald 1st hypervet, Pauline 3rd female vet and Drew 3rd hypervet. Clean sweep of the both the male and female team prizes.
