Westies at Comrie Relays

The Comrie Hills Relay is a well-established and respected event in the Scottish hill running calendar, offering a challenging yet rewarding course across the scenic terrain surrounding Glen Lednock. The race comprises four legs, totalling 43 kilometres and 1,733 metres of ascent, beginning and ending in the picturesque village of Comrie.

Each leg presents a unique test of endurance and skill. Legs 2 and 3 traverse rugged terrain. Legs 1 and 4, while still demanding, are more akin to trail races, making the event accessible to a range of runners.

With just one runner per leg, organising teams was a breeze—just grab three mates and go!

The Westies women came out in force, outnumbering the men (yah!) and bringing serious energy to the hills. The day unfolded smoothly, with runners showing up raring to go at their handover points.

The standout performance came from one of the Westies women’s teams, comprising Ellen, Ella , Ella, and Helen. The team not only secured victory in the women’s race but also set a new course record with a time of 3:46:50. Notably, Ellen broke the individual record for Leg 1, completing it in 50:26.

This achievement marks the first time a Westies women’s team has won the Comrie Hills Relay. The team was rewarded with celebratory prizes, including bottles of beer and stylish sunglasses.

The second women’s team delivered a commendable result, finishing 5th overall, while the men’s team placed 7th, rounding out a strong showing for the club.

Weather conditions were mixed, with intermittent sunshine giving way to rain later in the day. Fortunately, the organisers had the foresight to replace the traditional post-race barbecue with a warming curry, which was well received by all. The event concluded with excellent homemade cakes and a fun raffle. Solid day out.
