West District Championships

1987

An extremely muddy hilly real x-country course. Alisdair Campbell had a superb warm-up period then proceeded to fail miserably on the true test of man’s character. He also claimed his bad run could be put down to the fact that he had run 60 miles each week for the last fortnight. First time i’ve heard that a lot of training doesn’t do any good.

Mr Donohye must have heard about the secret of the course. Organising a Burn’s Supper indeed … a day early, call yourself an Ayrshireman Tom?

Memorable first tussle with the lads this but also more importantly first airing / mudding of the orange peril vest. So who’s this P O’Kane anyway sprinting away from the line? See you at the first real hill. Mr David lets-play-silly-buggers-with-the-vest-of-Westerlands-team-sprinting-down-the-first-hill Calder also, that was just on the warm up lap too. Otherwise lots of good hills gripping memories of the mud and who was that I spied still warming up down the field, obviously 9 mile warm up hadn’t been enough, yes quite correct, from now on no more single figure warm ups for me. A breathtaking sprint over the last two miles of the warm up. The subsequent event was hardly worth considering. With the subsequent disappointment of finding I hadn’t missed the race after all, took all that famous Campbell sparkle from my legs, mind you it was a real man’s race.

Back in the Bon Accord Dave Calder wondered if it was all worthwhile, being sick in the bog, all that effort merely to beat Campbell.
