Dumyat 2006

Lovely evening with a record 211 starters – in two batches as a second race had to be run to cater for a lot of Edinburgh based runners who arrived late because of traffic problems. Another big turnout of 18 Westies.

As usual I started near the back of the field but unfortunately the organisers had sent a sweeper out and she insisted on talking to the last runners. Gradually eveyone behind me went past to get away from the sweeper and I was stuck with her all the way up. She had a habit of announcing to everyone on the hill that she was sweeping and ‘this is the last runner’. Put me right off my carefully calculated pace and race plan!

I nearly got away from her as I tried to pass a guy in front at the bog but she appeared again at my shoulder and tried to start a conversation about how boggy it had been.

At the top I decided to throw caution to the wind and batter down as hard as possible past the guy in front then a woman who had just retrieved her shoes from the bog. Started to suffer a bit in the woods and even worse on the back lane but managed to keep going and avoid a second helping of sweeper’s chatter. Even managed to finish in front of Dave Rogers – he was in the second race though.

Nigel was first W in 9th, closely followed by Luke and David. Mindy was 1st male supervet and Pauline was 1st female supervet. Donald was possibly 1st hypervet but they did not have a separate category. He did however collect Mindy and Pauline’s prizes and promised not to abscond to the Lake District with them.
