Beinn Dubh report and photos

Beinn Dubh race took place last Wednesday in near perfect conditions for running. The ground was as dry as it gets in April; there was hardly any breeze and the earlier hail showers on the summit cleared away to leave a sunny evening. This was in contrast to 24 hours later when the mist was down to 100 metres and it was cold and wet.

A 101 runners completed the course with 35 from Westies – an impressive turnout. There was a good turnout of clubs from across central Scotland and further afield including Lochaber. Harry Pulham from Shettleston was in he leading group from the start gradually opening up a commanding lead finishing in 34 minutes, about a minute outside the course record. First Westie home was Gregor Stewart 3 minutes behind Harry. Ella Foreman had a very good run and was first female home for Westerlands in 42 minutes, also a minute outside the female course record. Both Gregor and Ella got the special unofficial prize of a fine loaf of bread each, baked and presented by Westie master baker Lorna.

It is also interesting that the age range seems to get wider each year. This year we had 4 V70s taking part including Bobby Shields who now has V80 in his sights. Some may not know, but Bobby won the first Jura Fell Race in 1973! Quite a legend and honoured to have him there on the night.

There was also a great turnout of Westies – old and new to help marshalling and other roles to make sure everything went to plan – so many thanks there. The race again made a small surplus and this was donated to Arrochar Mountain Rescue team who were in attendance.

Thanks to Barbara for taking photos…
