Ayrodynamic Turkey Trot 10k

Results

2 Westies ran.

For those who prefer a more detailed description, Graham Kelly and I were your “fat birds” for this 10k on a very windy day, and struggled to deal with the howling headwind and awkward gusts coming in from the sea for the first 3km. Runners clustered together to avoid taking the full brunt of it. We had a slow start, and for a while headed the second main pack with Emma Birnie of BRR. Graham and I tried to push on and bridge the gap, with Graham dropping me at 2.75km just before we got out of the gale. By then, the damage was done in terms of time lost and energy spent (took me about 12:30 to 3km). As the packs began to string out, Graham took several places in the last 2km from the laggards of the front group. I forged ahead of Emma Birnie at 6km, but could never get to the runners from the front group, and was re-taken by VPCOG junior Rebecca Finch in the last km, having passed her at the halfway mark after she dropped out of the leading pack.

I’ve never had to work so hard in a 10k, even for my PB which was a full minute faster than my 40.11 today (48th tubby turkey out of 271). Graham’s 39.21 for 39th place was excellent in the conditions. The winner was Neil Renault of Long Eaton in 32.09, well clear of Kerry Liam Wilson of Cambuslang in 33.24, with Kerry Lang of Kilbarchan the first female home in 35.45.

Hopefully I’ll have a chance to post a better time at Cambuslang or the Nigel Barge, having contracted Upson’s Syndrome of late. See you there!
