Speyside Way

Weather on Sunday was the worst it had been for a couple of weeks. But it was fine for a long run…

Yes it’s true, Dave’s favourite wee baldie s*&%# was soundly thrashed by two really old guys in the Speyside Way race. Having previously completed this run in terrible condition, WBS decided to go and try again. Same plan as before, jog to Craigellachie,then run hard over the hill, followed by suffering on the long tarmac section. Just before Craigellachie I heard footfalls behind me approaching at an incredible rate. Without even looking I guessed this must be Simon Pride. Sure enough, Simon had started 10min after everyone else, so that he had people to run after as training.

At this stage I am told I was about 6min behind the rest. The run up over and down Ben Aigan is brilliant, a total thrash. Caught a few folk going up the hill (Including John McLaghlin from Springburn, we then ran cheek by jowl until the end). At the bottom it is grit the teeth and get on with the hard part. Caught another guy on the road just before Fochabers, going up a steep tarmac hill funnily enough. Caught someone else with about 2k to go. But all to no avail, as I could see the other folk finishing just up ahead. I am pleased with the run as I felt fine on the final 10m and seem to have recovered OK, well at least I’m not limping around this time!

And the other shock defeat? YES!!! Westies beat Carnethy. Hooray! So make sure you all give John, Charlie and Chris a big hug for their brilliant efforts in the face of the seemingly unstoppable Carnethy juggernaught.
