An intimidating forecast didn’t stop record numbers (25 starters) turning out for this year’s Brack race.

Westies made up a large contingent of this cohort with 11 hardy souls embarking on the wet and windy wilds of Arrochar. The gazebo for registration lasted about 10 minutes before being blown about kite-like, so runners queued up at the back of a jeep to fill in forms and collect numbers!

The race was started in the dry with a few ominous clouds above but the constant heavy rain which was forecast for the day thankfully never really materialised with only a few squalls and even a bit of blue sky and sunshine!

The burn was high, but not uncrossable, and  by that point was far from the biggest worry for the racing elite as lungs were bursting and calves burning with the unrelenting steepness seemingly continuing up to the sky…..

Once the summit plateau was reached the shelter of the gully was replaced by strong winds over the top, unfortunately leading to the two Ochil front runners unable to hear the shouts from the marshall as they went off the wrong way. This left the race open for the taking. A fast, very slippery descent back to the forest road and a mile or so of pain and the finish!

First back was John Connaghan of Shettleston (58:47 a new V40 record), followed by our own Mr Alisdair MacInnes in a very respectable 59:33. Second Westie home was Luke Arnott in 1:02:54 (6th overall) but in a hotly contested V40 field only managed 3rd in category. The 1st V50 home was Bill Breckenridge (Shettleston) in 1:00:43 (3rd overall) and the 1st V60 was, predictably,  Mr Don Reid who sauntered round in a leisurely 1:09:49.

The ladies record fell, with Angela Mudge coming home in 1:03:45 and 7th overall. Followed by a pair of Glasgows finest; Kerry Cunningham 17th overall (1:22:30) and Jenn Ruddick 18th (1:23:39).

A grand day out was had by all and the rain held off until the prize giving after which a hasty retreat was made!
