Saugh Hill Race & the fun of the fair!

On Sunday I headed down to Girvan for the Saugh Hill Race.

There was a small field of only 11 runners! Of which I was the only Westie, are you listening Mr Brennan?

The race course had changed to a straight out and back, deferring from the run around the top and down from the years before.

With only 11 runners the finishing positions of the first four runners were established well before we left the road to attack the hill proper. David Parrish of Dumfries RC led the race from start to finish with me fair bit off his pace with Stephen Noble of Lomond Hill Runners (formerly Girvan AAC) in 3rd with Alan Murray of Ochil Hill Runners in close pursuit.

The only drama came when David missed a turning on the descent but he still had enough of a lead that by the time he realised and corrected himself he was still 20 yards ahead of me and pulled further away on the road to the finish.

At the finish everyone received a medal, Capri-sun and a handful of Quality Streets!

Of the fair it had the usual Highland dancing, tossing the caber and Ayrshire’s Premier Owl Display Team ‘Owl Magic’, see photos attached.

The only others things I can say about Girvan is that you get a lovely view of Ailsa Craig, the fish and chip shop behind the Harbour Cafe is worth a visit (preferably after the race or before if you’re John Quinn) and that it has the highest density of shopmobility scooters that I’ve ever seen!
