Nationals

26/2/2000

A good turnout at the Nationals, with only a few no-shows on the day. Chris Menhennet decided not to risk her injury (caused by tripping over a dog!) and wait for the Vets Nationals this weekend. Gibson was a last minute call-off in the Men’s race, also claiming an injury, although he’s not letting on how this was inflicted! The wind was blowing a gale at Irvine Beach Park, just for a change, but at least it was dry and reasonably warm. The Men’s race was first off, with Mark setting the pace chasing the big boys. He managed to just about stay up with them , finishing 36th overall. Damon was disappointed with his performance, but was second Westie in, while Brian showed that he has just about fully recovered from post New Year ‘flu, coming in well ahead of Dave. Charlie had a good run, especially considering the heavy milaeage he is putting in at the moment; as a bonus he managed to out-sprint John Donnelly at the line (a feeling of deja-vu for John as he was out-sprinted at the line last year by another Westie). Don Reid managed to hold off Peter for the last team place. Graeme Orr was a DNF,deciding to call it a day at the end of three out of the four laps. Westies ended up 19th team, which puts us amongst reasonable company. At least we beat Giffnock North this time, as well as Clydesdale Harriers.

In the Women’s race, Haley Haining was a runaway winner, with Angela Mudge in second place some way back. Elsie was first Westies Woman; her face indicated that she wasn’t quite enjoying the experience but she did manage to keep Muffy a good minute behind. Pat ran well and looked pretty strong at the finish, only a few places behind Muffy. Unfortunately SAF decided not to publish any more than the first 11 Women’s teams, so I’m not sure where we finished.

In the Men’s League, Damon now has an unassailable lead, so congratulations to him. The minor places are still up for grabs though, so it looks as if there could be a showdown at the Balloch to Clydebank a week on Saturday.

In the Women’s League, Chris’s absence and extra points for the Nationals has catapulted Pat into the lead. All will be decided in the next two weekends. Watch this space!
