john o’ groats to lands end cycle

(well almost!)

On Tuesday myself and walking pal Francis cycled into Lands End 12 days after leaving John O’ Groats. Francis cycled the whole continuous lot, totting up a fraction under 1200 miles, as we took the scenic route, compared to the more normal 900 mile route favoured by most. Unfortunately for me (see my blog for the sorry details!) I missed half of day 2 and all of day 3, but then cycled all of the next 10 days, and finished with a total of 1050 miles and 19 000 metres of ascent. Longest day was 120 miles on day 8, followed by 117 miles on day 9 and 104 miles on day 10 – they were killers. Hardest though was the 93 miles on day 11 with 2745 metres climbing through Devon and Cornwall, where I struggled at the end with a sore achilles and generally knackered-ness, until a lager shandy, crisps and Red Bull stop in a pub re-energised me for the last couple of hours into Boscastle. However, the numerous great English pubs and tea shops helped to make it all bearable (well almost). An amazing adventure, the full details of which, and photos, will follow shortly on my blog. I know David Riach has done it in something amazing like 4 days, but for a mere normal like me I was certainly emotional and well-chuffed at the end.

We were raising money for prostate cancer, details of which can be found at www.justgiving.com/fhjogle
