Devil’s Beeftub

I’d heard of the Devil’s Beeftub but had never seen it and this remains the case despite running in, out and around it on Saturday afternoon. The weather was appalling with heavy rain showers, blustery conditions and a cloud level of circa 2 feet. Even parking was an event following a much larger entry than normal (British Championship). Some cars may still be there! Three Westies took part: Owen O’Neill, Brian Brennan and myself, with an appearance from Captain Chris on photographic duties.

But what a great wee run. None of this ‘let’s run along a bit to warm up the legs’. It was straight into bracken within the first few metres and then onto a slope which was quickly unrunnable and a real pull to the top followed by a section of bog/swamp until more forgiving ground was reached. I could see Owen ahead following what had been a blistering start and I tried to close the gap but he was going well. I managed to put a couple of Carnethy boys behind me and all too soon found myself at the cairn atop Great Hill. A helpful high-vis jacket on the ground 20 metres away suggested the way down as I faced a bank of thick cloud offering zero visibility. The ground became steep, very steep and I made a mental note to try this one next year with brand new fell shoes or perhaps football boots. The ground was extremely slippy and I soon found myself on my bum shooting past other people trying to stay on their feet. Back up again, avoiding a few rocks and then after a minute or two I could make out the Carnethy tent and finishing flags. One final bum slide and I was at the bottom of the slope with a wee sprint to the finish. Owen kept his lead but I wasn’t far behind.

The standard of runners was extremely high and I felt I had an okay run but finished mid-table in the results and 130% of the winning time. I suppose it was a record and even Tim Austin’s time was nearly 114% of the winner. Must return next year when it’s back to the more usual 30 runners with none of those Lake District whippets!

My wife and 18 month old son also made the trip and watched the proceedings. We had to empty his shoes when we got back to the car and he was far more interested in the farmer’s quad bike than the race but he seemed to have fun despite a soaking. Must invite them to a sunny one next time.
