Devil o the Highlands

Well another attempt at the Devil, the usual buzz around Brodies, everyone eager to start. The only difference this year was my wife was standing beside me in a pair of running shoes, her first Ultra. Lorna and her pal Chris had put me to shame with their training, very focused.

It was a beautiful morning as six o’clock came and went and everyone headed up the hill. Met up with fellow Westie, Alisdair McCallum, good company over to Bridge of Orchy. Straight through and up and over to Victoria Bridge, the place was hoaching with midges. The run over to White Corries was magic, just such a beautiful place.

A wee bight to eat at the checkpoint and round to Altnafeadh.  The climb up the Devil’s Staircase was okay but began to feel the legs cramping on the run down into Kinlochleven, I knew I was starting to slow down.  The last fourteen miles were manageable, but the legs were tired, so had to switch off a fair bit.  It was a relief to finish! About forty odd minutes slower than last year.

But more importantly my wife finished in 11hrs 02, she looked fantastic, very proud of her.
