Callander Crags (Winter)

4 of us made it up in the car to Callander for the Crags race.  Claire, Niall, Duncan and myself.  Claire was providing the moral support and demanding a top 8 finish from Niall!

There was a huge turn out for the race, easily over 100 which even ended up delaying the start by 15 minutes.

The race itself starts on a brutally steep path, this slowly levels out as the path disappears and your negotiating the fastest way through trees, their roots and rocks.  Once you get to the summit it’s more of the same again, good honest fun.  Though the inverse of the up path is an equally steep tarmac road, then if you have anything left in your legs it’s an undulating trail along the bottom of the crags back to the start finish.

The race was led from start to finish by Prasad who I think ended up winning by over 3 minutes in about 21:30 and only a few seconds off his record from last year.

How did the Westies get on, well Niall obliged to Claire’s request and came in 5th, he said he was in 4th until and last couple of 100 yards when a Carnethy runner, (no results yet so all guess work) probably Andrew Gilmore pipped him.

Duncan similar to myself was pleased with his run and had a stronger race than the Greenmantle Dash a few days before.

George Douglas also was along with a few of his nephews who were running in the Junior race, which I think was the same course as the adult race!  It was George’s 2nd race of the year after running Aonach Mor on new years day.

Overall a great race with a bit of everything and defo be up for taking it on again.  Duncan mentioned it would be great to see the summer version of the race in the bog and burn series, I wholeheartedly concur.
