Cairn Table Hill Race
1985
6 miles 500 feet
Conditions: expensive
A fine time was had by all crawling up this cross-country race on a slight gradient. No way are C Class races any easier than A Class. Aldridge perhaps realises what a taste of a real mans races is like *. Mr Tolmie, a tax exile from the South, returns in fine form to prove he still has two working legs after a fashion of five years soft living in the cushy South. Mr Wellings was put back in his rightful place after giving the KOTM a scare last week at Dollar. Mr Struthers … well what can be said that’s not been said before?
The most remarkable event of the day, apart from the explosive inflation of the entry fee, Campbell misses finish. Some people found there was altogether too much running in this race, after all, it’s uphill walking that we do this racing for. Wellings was burnt out from trying to go fast, medium pace by the standards of those light footed folk who stayed at home, before he reached the hill.
* If this is true where were the real men? I found that the race left me feeling 3lbs (£3) lighter!
