Ben Lomond Hill Race 2013

Results

Was an early start on Saturday to pick up Andy McCall of Glenpark and to grab the Minibus from the hire company.

After van duties had ceased about 12:30 I ambled in to registration to see who was about.  It wasn’t my intention to run but after gentle persuasion from John and Christine I found myself on the start line.

Started steady and waited for the customary Alan Smith overtake.  Himself and John Hammond of Carnethy pulled away up the Hill while Andy Birnie and myself plodded away with Gregor Stewart and Michael Sweeney in our sights.

On the first cut off the tourist path I made it past Andy.  Gregor and myself pushed each other along once back on the tourist path to get onto the tail of Michael.  Wasn’t until the Zig Zags that we were able to catch Michael and 3 of us topped out in 13th to 15th position.

Unfortunately Michael went over his ankle at the start of the descent which meant a long slow way home, shame given the hard work put in on the ascent.

Gregor and myself switched positions a few times on the descent, with both of us catching up with John Hammond early into it.  I felt fresh and really enjoyed my descending, far more than the last and only other time I ran this race back in 2009.

Think Andy Birnie was hot on my heels nearing the forestry track, though was sad to hear that he took a tumble and cracked his head.  Hopefully nothing too serious, Get well soon Andy.

All in all an enjoyable day out and a very big thank you to all the clubmates/marshals for what was a very well marshalled course.  Hope the new zig-zag up, off tourist path down is a mainstay.  Great addition, makes sense with more regard for walkers and nullifies runners taking short cuts on the descent.
