Hill Running Tips
Hill Running Tips for Getting Started
For your first Westies run, what should you bring with you?
Footwear
You probably own a pair of running shoes that will do for starters, although you might consider purchasing some trail or fell shoes. Trail shoes are basically sturdy road shoes, with a better grip and more robust upper, and are fine for general non-technical hill running and training. Fell running shoes are lighter, with less cushioning, and have a more aggressive tread. Don't worry about buying fell shoes straight away. You can discuss the pros and cons of which shoes to buy when you come along.

Clothing

Right, what about clothes? This is a personal issue, with some people preferring shorts or leggings, t-shirts or long sleeve tops, etc. The main thing is that it is composed of some of the lighter synthetic fabrics we have today as opposed to cotton which when wet, becomes heavy and cold and doesn't dry very well on the hill. A small lightweight windproof jacket is essential because even if you don't use it, at least it will be there for emergency. Hat and gloves are also a good addition to have, even in summer – that shower may feel like nothing at ground level but can be very cold when you are at 3000 feet.
Other Equipment
And other things? What you'll also need to get is a running bumbag that you can fasten round your waist and then you'll always be able to carry the essentials, like your jacket, hat and gloves mentioned above. Initially when you are out with the group, you won't need to bother about navigation but that all changes if you decide to go out for a hill run by yourself as then you will need to pack a map and compass. That presumes of course that you know how to use these efficiently but don't worry, someone in Westies can show you how to learn this vital skill for when the mist comes down. Some folk also like to throw in a small drinks pouch and some food as well, especially if the run is going to be over an hour. With safety being paramount, many people also run with a whistle and a mobile phone in their bumbag, just in case!

That should be enough to give you an idea of what to start with and you'll pick up everything else as you come out on the hill with Westies.
