Kinnoul Hill
Kinnoul Hill
Everyone else did seem to be at Kinnoul (who says Westies don't travel?!) and rightly so for such an enjoyable race around the twisty fast up and down Kinnoul woodland trails. The torrential rain couldn't touch us as we dashed about under the trees.
The tip from the Westies men was to get ahead in the first uphill bit and just try to stay there. The idea being we'd have got such a lead that by the time the flat road running speedsters got their breath back we'd be long gone, a speck on the horizon!
So I tried it. Blasted (or at least put a bit of effort in to move quickly) off at the start and put all my energy into the first uphill bit. The rest is predictable.... At the top I started going backwards - that strange running phenomenon where you seem to be putting in loads of effort but going nowhere slowly. Having previously had delusions of speed and thinking I could catch Helen Palmer I suddenly found myself with concrete legs and being passed effortlessly by a striding David Calder. Then, just before the end, I was the victim of Donald's now infamous sprint finish! Must sharpen my elbows in preparation for the Kilpatricks....
Well done to all Westies who turned up, especially Manny, Nige and David who might have won a mens team prize and Helen Palmer who was 3rd lady overall.

This is what Wednesday night racing is all about. A nice, congested uphill start gives you the ideal excuse to begin slowly. A competent downhill stride leaves you with a brace of Westies vests (Donald & Cat) within "easy" striking distance. All your reserve energy is utilised to ensure successful scalping of this pair. Finally your guts are wrenching as you realise that even though this is a sprint of a race of only 4 miles and a few hunner feet of climbing, you're totally spent and there's still a bit of a climb before the finish! You finally descend into hyperventilating overload as the mind's need to save face overcomes the body's requirement to avoid agonising pain. And all that to finish up 9 minutes behind the winner!!!
It's great fun and I loved it!
To add to my joy, it was nice to see the Bonnyman again, apparently with no more weans added to the collection.

Did Westies get 1st team? Does anyone have results?Yes, I agree with Dave, it was good to see BB back in the right colours and looking frighteningly thin, but thankfully not sharp!Well done to Nige who did his Bog & Burn chances no harm with yet another solid run at the front in a good quality field.
