CATHKIN BRAES TRAIL RACE

There was a fantastic turnout of 26 Westies for this Shettleston hosted race round Cathkin Braes. It is a 2 lap course, approx 6 miles and 265m ascent, with fields, woodland paths, steep wee downs and ups and the occasional quad bike and local Castlemilk ned to contend with. Nigel led the troops home in 5th place, Helen was 2nd lady and Murdo and Donald won Vets prizes (tastes good guys, thanks) and Graham Benny trundled in at the back having went for a bit of a wander off route. There were plenty of wee mini Westies races going on, particularly round about my end of the race, which certainly egged me on to my first race since November, with 7 of us in a row within 90 secs. Soup and bread was provided afterwards and there were plenty of liquid prizes, some of which will be winding its way down to the Lakes this weekend for the Westies Weekend - thanks Donald and Murdo! 63 ran the main race and there was also a junior/fun run. Thanks to Malcolm Patterson and all the others at Shettleston for this cracking wee race.

    Is that right?

26 Westies out of a field of 63. That means we made up 41% or 2/5ths of the race - fabulous turnout!

Well my first B&B, actually every race this year is going to be my first something (TEE HEE) and it was virtually a westies wed night run, but the scenery wasnt as nice as usual. the course was interesting and you had to run all the way, i descended like a stone and climbed like one too! And was having a good tussle with Alan until Dave passed me. Where did you come from? the neds were encouraging, one "im impressed" and then a flasher on the 2nd lap. Ah the joys of urban running. Well done everyone see you at the whangie!

This was Adventure Racing at its rawest! The Baghdad Marathon must be safer. When I eventually found the start there were only 7 minutes to go but I noticed a lot of Westies there - "a sea of yellow" as someone in the start huddle remarked, or is that a line from an old Beatles song.Something new for me, a downhill start. Then across fields being buzzed by neds on a quad bike and monkey bikes then more downhill to the first verbal encounter with the natives - "Whit youse runnin' fur?" - well, you wouldn't want to walk round there, would you. Up the first sort of hill, across and up into the woods just hanging on to the back of the field then missed a marker on the descent from the woods. Saw the first of the juniors below me so tried to head straight down but had to hike through a lot of dead bracken down to the outskirts of Castlemilk and the main verbal encounter with the natives. Even after 37 years in Glasgow the only words I could make out were the ones that Manny uses, a lot. A couple of them mooned as I passed then the divots started to fly round my ears. Thank goodness their bigger brothers and sisters would be in the pub or drinking Bucky in a bus shelter. A bit of climbing and running eventually got me back to the start with one eye on my watch in case the leaders caught me before the end of my first lap. Thankfully I made it with a couple of minutes to spare.Probably only pride kept me going for a second lap. I was able to appreciate the scenery with some wierd lighting under the black clouds across the city. The first lot of neds had disappeared but the mobile battalion had grouped in the woods and just looked on in pity as I trundled past. The artillery battalion at the bottom of the hill were now more inquisitive but passive although they had been removing some of the markers so I ended up in the undergrowth and brambles with a fox for company. Extricated myself and headed for the woods only to start getting cramp so just jogged gratefully back to the finish.Quite a different experience, only race I've seen Police tape used as markers! Next year? maybe but only if I'm fitter and able to keep up and not get dropped right off the back.

Best moment of the night has to go to the great finish by Donald and Elsie who fought out a fine battle right up to the finishing line. Donald came from behind to nip in front of Elsie with just a second to spare!

What made it so utterly compelling was a combination of Westies egging on Donald to put the foot down and catch Elsie and the look on Elsie's face when he prevailed. Poor Elsie looked utterly offended that everyone was rooting against her.

Ehhhhh ....not so sure the police tape was marking the course - think it may have been left over from the last "Scene of Crime".

Totally agree with JDs comment about the wee mini Westies race - it was good fun at least until I looked back and saw John a lot closer than I was comfortable with !!!!
