DUMGOYNE HANDICAP
Handicapper Chas will provide a fuller report and times soon, but here are some photo highlights. The weather relented and was fine, the course was very muddy, there was a good turnout, the prizes were Easter Eggs and the pub was smoke-free! Thanks to Chris for the idea and Charlie for times.

Well the poor weather in the afternoon didn’t deter the troops for the inaugural running of the Dumgoyne Handicap. A great turnout of 21 runners for a little route devised by Cap’n Chris, saw folk climb to the top of our favourite little hill and back, involving about five miles and 1300 feet. Yours truly, without the assistance of the other Master Handicapper Dave, was left to do the honours and over a 28 minute period, set off the staggered Conga line. Managing a little 20 minute jog while the others were away, I can testify how muddy some of the pipe-track was but apparently the hill path was much worse.
Having started first, Pat managed to hold the lead all the way and the ex-Sec returned over the finishing line for a well deserved win – nice one Pat! A minute and a bit later, Graham K came in for 2nd, and Pauline, despite a late start, put in a fast run to grab 3rd. There then followed a spate of 13 runners within three minutes, in varying states of grimace and mud body painting, with the time gaps opening slightly for the last few to finish. A quick little prize giving thanks to JD, then we retreated to the Blane Valley pub just up the road for some light refreshments and polite conversation.
Points of note : Well I felt sorry for poor Robert who had been hoping to do well on his home patch, but hobbled in, having turned his ankle. Look on the bright side Robert, at least you didn’t have far to limp home, and anyway, you wouldn’t be a true Westie if you were not carrying an injury. Ladies Cap’n Cat ran the fastest lassies time of the night and Chris the same for the laddies. He must have some sort of NASA formula up his sleeve as he predicted a winning time of 44 mins and ran 43m 50s – amazing! The ‘Legs of Steel’ prize goes to Luke, who after a week up North of wild camping and hill bagging, grabbed two Corbetts in Torridon this morning, suffered a four hour drive home, then ran within a minute of Chris tonight, five mins in front of anyone else. All in all a good evening, to be repeated at some point?
Results as follows. (Finish Position, finish time, actual time)
1) Pat 69 20 69 202) Graham K 70 37 50 373) Pauline 71 10 61 404) Luke 71 21 44 515=) Alan & Angela 71 44 63 147) Drew 71 50 65 208) Chris 71 50 43 509) Simon 72 10 50 1010) Hamilton 72 12 53 4211) Gillian 72 20 69 2012) Cat 72 21 55 2113) Donald 72 31 59 0114) Ian McM 73 16 65 1615) Jason 73 34 58 3416) JD 75 59 52 2917) Rod 77 05 52 0518) Davy 80 30 64 3019) Robert 81 48 69 4820) Maureen 81 48 77 1821) Ana 86 05 71 05

That was fun, well apart from the wind, the mud and the hill!
Having just had advice from CaptChris to set off as hard as poss. I trundled off with stiff achilles, loosened up and anjoyed the lower mud, died on the hill and enkoyed the scramble back.
Once again I was beaten by Catriona who stormed past me on the hill. Though I caught her on the descent she moved clear on the flat. "I'll get you Penelope Pitstop!"
Thanks for the idea, the organising and fellow racers for a fun night.

Indeed - after two showers .... I nearly have all the mud off - fantastic night. Reminds me that at some point in the future I must remember and move to the north side of the city. The south cannae compete !
Echo the cheers to Charlie for the timing, Chris for the idea, JD for the egg and the rest of you Westies folks for the company.
Happy Easter ..............................
