Knockfarrel hill race 8th April 2006

Cool and sunny with lashings and lashings of mud saw 48 runners take to their heels at this good wee race from Strathpeffer.

Luke made a mid holiday appearance along with the re-born racer Brian.

Luke set off like a whippet and took me a mile before I got past him with my already pulled left calf. The majority of the course was under several inches of thick slippy mud and the going was torture, even along the usually lovely ridge of short grass, before entering the tearing hell of gorse and pine branches in the forest with extra mud for good measure.

The downhill sections near the top were extremely exciting with wet roots and yet more mud taken at speed with shoes that were as about effective as glass ballet shoes on an ice rink.

I had slotted into 3rd but in a lot of pain with my calf so couldn't do anything about the 2 guys in front as they eased away in the run in, but happy with 3rd considering how much beer I had consumed the night before in the company of ex-Westie Kevin Doonan.

Luke just missed out on 8th in a last minute sprint for the line but was rightly pleased with his run.

The bold Brennan made an impressive sight as he slid his way back along the old railway line grunting something about "bloody mud" as he crossed the line.

Great bun fight after in the new community hall finished off a good day out.
