CHAPELGILL

Chapelgill has always been one of my favorite hill races. It seems to encapsulate everything a good hillrace should be. Low key, great scenery, incredibly steep, favouring descenders, with no long approach to the hill so that road runners can burn you off, easy parking and well away from busy roads so I can turn my back on my kids and they don\'t get run down, and a good junior race to boot. Thats why I have not missed many in the last 20 yrs.

This year, it was bloody cold, (see the pictures in the SHR website) but still good for racing. 4 Westies turned up for the senior race, Luke, Murdo, Rosie, & myself. As the race unfolded, Luke went of to the left on the ascent, whilst I slugged it out with Murdo in the smallish pack. Up front Stewart Whitlie battled it out with pocket rocket Euan Jardine, the honours eventually going to the latter. As we drew near the summit Luke was just ahead of me but got away after the turn, with a blistering descent which I struggled to match despite passing two other runners in the process.

Luke came in 7th, moi 9th, Murdo 13th I think and Rosie had the misfortune to bring up the rear of the field, but got the last laugh because only to females entered!!

The junior race had 4 junior westies running & maybe I can persuade one of my crew to write a brief report.
