IN THE DARK HANDICAP

Runners' reports and times hopefully to follow, but the basics were - a great turnout for the run and curry, including many virgins, lovely cold dry weather, fantastic prizes (coconuts, papayas, mangoes, creme eggs, and even some beer). After all that we rounded the evening off with a near record turnout at the curry in The Indian Cottage in Kirkintilloch.

As John says, a good turnout with plenty of virgins along for the ride. First place went to newcomer Paul, who finished a few seconds ahead of Blair, who sprinted past Katherine within 5 yards of the finish. Katherine, that is, whose headtorch was mistaken by Air Traffic Control as being a low-flying jet (see photo's for what we mean). Just behind Katherine came another newcomer, Elizabeth, who conned the handicappers into a generous start ( for the first and last time, it should be said). Elizabeth passed Drew shortly before the finish, and both were just ahead of Pat. Yet another newcomer, Davey, was next; he deserved a special prize for being the only competitor to race in shorts...whatever happened to real Westies runners?Chris and David finished close behind, in the fastest and second fastest actual times of the evening, followed by the fast-improving Jason and Jon. Relative newcomer Robert came next, followed by Luke, who failed to live up to the handicappers' expectations as scratch man. Old-timers Donald, Cat, Muffy and Ian brought up the rear in a closely fought race where everyone finished within a 6-minute band. A minor miracle or excellent handicapping, take your pick?Apart from yours truly and Charlie, the cheerleaders were Fiona, John D and Margaret.

It was cold, it was dark, the handicap was John shining a bright light in your face as you tried to climb in the cold dark. All in all great fun, and a westies wednesday run where we weren't all hopelessly lost! Did I mention it was cold?

Indeed, well done to Davy for standing around in shorts for half an hour before the race started when everyone else had 5 layers on. I did notice that for the race proper, Ian, Drew and myself were all in shorts. I can't remember if anyone else was brave/mad enough. Results here in time order
