Western Districts Cross Country Championships
Dry and windy conditions.
Drew put in another sterling display of effervescent running... as Dave said at last nights Xmas dinner, that man's an inspiration!
Grimorr ran the last two laps in bare feet.
Don was just off his night-shift (and feeling knackered) but Dave and Chris tried to persuade him to run anyway.
Helen turned up just after the womens race finished.
Catriona was first Westies women home.
Dave and Gibbie had a decent battle with the best-looking man coming in second.
Fraser had a stormer, managing to come in a minute or so behind Captain Chris.
Blair also had a great run, managing to hold off quality opposition in the form of Grimorr, Brian Edridge and some cheeky get who tried to pick a fight during the second lap... all in the name of running etiquette. "You're f***ing mental", the fifty-year-old screamed as Blair pushed him out of the way.
Hamilton made an excellent effort considering his recent injury problems.
Pauline trailed Muffy for the most part but Muffy found that when she ran she actually moved quicker and thus pulled away.
The mens vets and the wummin teams both came fifth.

It was a pretty lame excuse of Don's. He looked fresh as a daisy and would have helped move Westies up from 14th team position. Also, no doubt you're all confused with Blair's reporting about who won the battle between Dave and Gibbie. Gibbie may indeed be a fine-looking specimen ( especially compared with the aforementioned Blair), but it was that chisel-featured hunk Dave who came off best in that encounter.
Just to prove who is the better looking, Blair, why don't you put a vote up on the website, alongside the curry night?
And while we're talking about mistakes and Blair, he also got the team results wrong...see below.
All-in-all it was a surprisingly good cross-country trail considering it was a racecourse.

OK so what's an old-timer to do - trailing the cream of the Westy pack after a lap where the legs felt like lead? "Rolling back the years" (if not the sleeves) it seemed a good occasion for making a statement about the venue and conditions underfoot. As I cast off my cumbersome New Un-Balance studs, (to cries of "Yer daft!" from the ambulance staff) I found new vigour as I slithered through the doggy-doo and puppy-poo, praying for no cuts to the feet. Can I recommend this form of running to anyone running a fast, flat grassland course? in the days when I could still run decent times, I used to "barefoot" the National XC champs when they were held at Hamilton racecourse. I'm in good company - I'd cite Bruce Tulloh, Abebe Bikela, Zola Budd, and Fergus Murray as fellow barefoot-soldiers. Lady Westies, fear not, I don't remove any other items of kit during a race!
