Hugh WIlson Memorial 10km Road Race, East Kilbride

East Kilbride and its many roundabouts looked lovely in the winter sunshine.....almost. It's not exactly a scenic route this 10km road race but it was a good run, flat out whilst negotiating highly technical obstacles such as bridges, ramps and underpasses.

There was a fine Westies turnout. Chris was there battling it out with the fast women and jet lag. He beat the 3rd lady after a sprint finish round the track. The effects of a recent trip to Korea and a party the night before seemed minimal. Luke turned up and despaired of doing anything like as well as he could on a hillier course due to the lack of fearless manic descending required around the pavements of East Kilbride, although he still seemed to be going pretty swiftly. Graham, in his mission to get a PB for a 10km, was going well from the start and continued to be too fast for me to catch. Jason ran well despite having been plagued by the lergy for the past week. Grim Orr was there in the flashy Reeboks - such shoes on the move are a sight to behold. Ian Struthers also put on a good turn of pace, albeit in less eye catching footwear and Drew put in yet another fine performance at yet another race this year. JD turned up as a spectator and provided some welcome encouragement to get the Westies athletes round the final 400m.

I haven't seen any results yet, never know, we might have won a prize!

Thanks Catriona. Yes it could have done with a couple of higher bridges to spice things up. The descent was a bit short for me to make any impression on Chris's lead.

Perhaps I should share the following dialogue held over the last 500 metres. I'd had a tussle throughout the race with a "wee Hairie" ie female member of GUH&H. As she finally streaked away (no, not THAT kind of streaking!) I shouted after her, "Well done the Hairies! that was me 40 years ago!" She replied, "You mean - a GIRL?"
