Meall a Bhuachaille 05

Four Westies journeyed North of the snowline for this traditional end of season dash - Stef, John D, myself and Brian B - backing up his promise at Tinto to get out and run more. Elsie and Peter were there in support - and Westies HHR defect(!) Jim H marshalling for his new club's promotion.

I passed Stef on the Corbett ascent, but his faster descending skills took him to the bealach first despite the ice and snow covered steps. I caught him again by the second top only to watch him disappear down the deep heathery descent, his bigger stride carrying him effortlessly away from my rapidly shortening quads. The final climb in the forest was a not so pleasant surprise, but enabled me to take a few places back.

Stef finished 30th in a pretty high quality field with 63m14; I followed in 36th with 64m48. Don Johnally was next home in 47th with 67m36; with Brian closing out a steady Westies showing in 78th with 75m40.

105 ran, Angela Mudge posted yet another female event record at 55m48. Cameron Watson and Des Crowe won the open and vets respectively.

The SHR do after was a fairly sedate but highly enjoyable affair, even with Manny's arrival later in the evening. At one point Peter and Elsie were going to send out for the Highland equivalent of five barley loaves and two fishes - but the catering fared well, despite repeated forays by Stef and John Blair Fish.

Jim had some Westies race pics and Manny had a good group pic of the aftermath - Can you post them here, guys?

It was a cracking day. Weather was cold and bright with a smattering of snow on he tops and wonderful views if you could be bothered to look. Despite my football-induced niggling injury (forced me to abandon Munro-bagging on Sun and now going for a rare visit to the Physio) I thought I had a fairly good race, despite being about 3m down on previous times. I battled Gordon Pryde uphill till he tore past me on the descent, my wee legs no match for his long lanky ones in the heather. The 2nd lady also passed me here and was very useful to follow downhill as I simply followed in her footsteps before grinding my way past her and a few others on the "sting-in-the-tail" uphill mile that followed. There were good buns and sandwiches put on for us after the race. Westies featured in the evening SHR prizegiving, being 1st teams in the Bog and Burn series, Val Brunton finishing 1st/2nd ? and 2nd teams in the main champs - well done everyone. And thanks to Highland Hillrunners and Jamie Thin etc. for organising the race and "do".

Couldn't agree more with the earlier comments ....great race, well organised, marked, and marshalled and I came close to enjoying it. Second race back and less than a day after returning from the US it was just the ticket. Shame there weren't more Westies as I can recommend this event to one and all.
