Glasgow to Edinburgh Relay

After my diabolical first leg run, I thought I'd at least get the record for posting the quickest race report!

After a hectic week of emails detailing the crossover points etc. it seems like everything was running smoothly!

Strange

start with four teams on the first leg (Calderglen, HBT, Westies and I

think the last team was Springburn) but by the time Archie finished the

second leg there were five teams! At this stage we sitting adminrably

in 5th place and Alice was about to start reeling in the 4th team,

which was HBT.

We await a Grim update for the latter stages...

OK Blair, I grab the baton and continue the report! After Blair's "no pain, no gain" gritty first leg (a clear case of jogger's nipple in evidence), Archie made a welcome return to competitive running, having confided to me his opinion (treasonable to Westies' high command) that this was "real" running, as opposed to gravity-aided hill-running techniques.

Archie's loping gait was followed by a stirring leg by Alice, who almost caught the tubby Calderglen runner before taking to her bike and chasing the pack all the way to Linlithgow.

Helen paced new recruit Ally over the 4th leg, overhauling the Calderglen runner. Now Steffen was waiting to try out the novel experience of horizontal running over the longest leg. But Steff, why did you have to do a Ronnie G and run to the finish topless?!

Drew induced momentary panic in the ranks at Linlithgow by announcing that the road to Winchburgh was closed. Did that discourage us? NEVER! Unfortunately, Springburn Harriers were suffering from a bad case of the Marc McColls (ie taking a fun run in the sun seriously) and had established a 15 minute lead by the start of the 7th stage, which even in my bionic Reebok carpet slippers (much admired by all) was a canal bridge too far. At least we kept Calderglen from the award of the wooden spoon! unless Jane is disqualified by the stern Ivor Boggie for her preferring a good blether with the wee Hairie at the finish, instead of running an extra loop prescribed by the uber-Trotter.

Marc, away and clone yourself! Run for fun with Westies, or just become a treadmill-tramping roadie!

My first time! Quite enjoyable. Didn’t see many Westies from Falkirk onwards, apart from Alice, Graeme and Jane. Thanks to Alice for providing some pacing at the end of my leg. I would have drifted off to sleep and into the canal otherwise. Thanks to HBT for the free drink at the end in Cleusters in Edinburgh.

I ran a 58:18 in my 8.3 something mile leg and therefore narrowly miss the British Olympic team qualification. The runner I took over from arrived 20 minutes early, so I spent the first 7 miles warming up.

Perhaps we can vary the setup next year and have a mandatory pint of bitter before each leg (shandy might do for the ladies). Am sure Marc would turn blue with disgust!
