HBT Grudge letter 1988

Dear Dave,

I'm afraid since we lost our match, the trophy and our pride over Gleniffer Braes three weeks ago our morale has been very low. The trophy represented the only glory we had achieved over a barren season. An empty space now occupies the mantlepiece where once a gleaming trophy proudly dominated th room. No longer will visitors eyes light up when hearing the heroic tales of derring-do which surrounded the wrestling of the trophy from the clutches of the WCCC. Still, the bog seat will come in handy and is already glistening proudly in its customised display cabinet prominent on top of the wardrobe.

A top level enquiry of the HBT polit[...] has ensued. We do not tolerate mistakes in HBT and those not fanatically devoted to spreading the word of Trotterdom throughout the civilised world have been rooted out and publically discredited and banished. Unfortunatelythis has left us a trifle short of runners, so we have let everybody off with a smacked wrist and have deducted 50 house points each instead. However, the revlution has taken it's tollat board level and a new order has emerged at HBT boardroom level to mastermind th re-awakening of a new dawn of trotting glory. Out go Captain, vice Captain, Treasurer to be replaced by a new Secretary - a promising young all-rounder called Robin Thomas, and as Captain a well known cretin called Matt Ogstan whose organisational skills and ability to inspire have often benn compared with those of President Idi Amin (as indeed has his running abilities). We are scouring the country, chequebook in hand, to sign up new talent to defeat the evil yellow peril in the summer as the great leap forward begins to take effect.

In the meantime as my parting shot as HBT secretary and opening salvo as Captain I must pay a heartfelt thanks to you and the rest of the club for a great race, a superb course, a wonderful amount of tasty grub and liquid refreshment. Thanks especially to yourself for the course and Archie for providing the accommodation. You have certainly set the standard we shall attempt to match next summer.

In the meantime,

Up yours sincerely,

Matt
