Ben Rinnes 5 Tops, 2005
It wasn't what I expected! Having read past race reports and viewed photo's of previous races, I expected glorious sunshine, tremendous views and idyllic running. Well, at least we got some of the latter. We left Glasgow early morning with clear skies but as we got closer to Dufftown, the clouds came down and it was a typically dreich Grampian day by the noon start time. Manny's recent taunting of Westies being averse to travelling made an impact as I counted 9 Westies at the start line.
Nige was first Westie home in 5th place with David Riach 3 places behind. Also present were Swaz, Pete, Jane, Elsie, Catriona, Hamilton and myself with Muffy uphill taking photographs. I was running OK until the last two-thirds, when my lack of training became apparent, but even so, it was an enjoyable race. Mind you, I don't understand why the marshalls don't talk to me; I realise that my face is covered in slabbers and when grimacing I look like Quasimodo, but they certainly weren't into smalltalk!
Highlight of the day was the sublime words of the Highland Games commentator, doing a sterling job to keep the crowds entertained. Lowlight was the meal Muffy, Hamilton and I had in the Ben Mhor Bistro in Grantown on Saturday night. Avoid it!

I think they were all actually frozen in position... And I wondered why they weren't handing out bananas at the top...I think it must have been worse sitting up there for 2 hours rather than running it...

Well, what a day, what a race. Are they all this bad/good?Two days later just about got the breath back. Thanks again,Jane for the shout at the top,if ever the term Wabbit was appropriate it was for the jelly-legged (full-bodied,covered figure, that was about to spiral out of control)if immediate sustenance was not administered.Yes not one to take chances-full body cover, while most of the field seemed to be breezing along in shorts & vest! Unbelievable.Would they say:"slightly inclement on the tops". Ruddy severe more like.As far as the marshalls go,Dave, well ,of course Catriona & I actually stopped & had a laugh with them-you were moving so fast they stared back in awe!Really though, they do want your number at the finish, but to other marshalls you give your number:"Och, I only want the first three runners". That's fine (they were thro' an hour ago).Where are you with that? And so to that final gasp, that all out sprint finish,as you enter the arena that cauldron of activity, the tug-of-war going on,you weave in and out of the pipers all over the track,ah yes, where else would you get all this applause for limping home.Still, always next year.Or....... "Could do better".
