Round Arran Relay 2005
Not quite as successful as last year, when Westies A Team came in third, however it was still a good day out for the twelve of us who ventured down the coast.
The weather forecast was sunny and very warm; in the event, it remained overcast and a bit coller for most of the race, which made conditions just about OK for running. A minor miracle occurred when all 12 Westies arrived on time at the right time at the right place. Don't underestimate what this means. There were three buses in Brodick taking runners on four different routes at different times, so the 3rd stage north, for example, started before either the first or second stages! And so on..... Best laugh at the start was the two Clydesdale runners who raced out of the toilets at Lochranza after the starting gun had gone and disppeared into the distance chasing the north-leg runners....only to re-appear a minute later running in the opposite direction; they were doing the 1st stage south!!
Grimorr allegedly turned up and ran his 3rd stage south leg, complete with £5 Reebok zipup trainers, although no-one bar Drew (who was running the same stage for the composite B team) saw him. The rest of the A team(Mark, John, Hamilton, Dave,Blair) put in a workmanlike performance, with Mark having the best run, finishing his 1st stage north in 5th place.
However it was the composite team who took all the glory. Catriona, Louise and Jane all put in solid performances on the northern stages. Late withdrawals by several Westies Wummin(Liz, Lil, Muffy) meant that we had to pull in Alice's friend Evan to do the first stage south. Apparently Evan used to do a bit of cross-country at Uni and manages to go out about once a month now. He finished up runner-up on his stage!! Makes you sick...or is he just providing more evidence of Ronnie's theory of doing little-or-no training?
Then Alice had a fantastic run on the hilly second stage south. The first mile and a half rises up about 500 feet. Alice stormed up this hill and kept up a good pace until the second big climb after 41/2 miles, picking up places all along, finishing in 10th place overall (out of 31) and fastest woman.
The sun came out at the end of the afternoon to cap another good Arran day out. No results yet though Central AC's boyband lookalikes won the men's race whilst B*********** won the woman's race. But we're not allowed to talk about them!

I shouldn't really be letting everyone know this because it highlights how crap my time actually was, but what the heck... I measured the 1st leg South on Anquest only to discover that the length is actually only 6.75 miles and not 7.5 as stated in the race details.... tsk!
863 feet of ascent though!

Dave, we know that John Donn is blind (and maybe dumb - he doesn't realise his attire is comic?) but sure as hell I saw him cycling against the tide of 3rd leg south runners as I led the "1 hour plus" peloton into Brodick. So John, Jane Robertson, and Drew's loyal wif Margaret all saw me in my bionic Reebok carpet slippers. Had to get the 3.45 ferry back, sorry if I missed the post-race festivities!

A great day out in a great place. Thanks to Dave for his Westies organisation and to all in the race for theirs. My plans to leisurely cycle to the start of my leg south 3 were torn apart when we leg 3 runners were told that in fact we were running before even the leg 2 and 3 runners and therefore had to jump into a bus in 2 minutes ready to run! This panicked Jane and I a bit but we got here in the end, starting a little after 12 and finishing hours before anyone else arrived back. The leg itself - well 10 miles of tarmac is 10 miles of hell for me these days, my road-running days having been left well behind in the 80s and 90s. I had a steady run for 7 miles before waking up and warming up and getting my *** in gear and breaking away from Helen Morton of Irvine A.C. who had been drafting me Tour de France style, catching a Clydesdale woman and finishing in 67m 30s, well beaten by a red-headed Bella Burd and umpteen men - give me the hills anyday. Louise and I stayed over, enjoying the sunny weather witha beer outside the hotel at Corrie. On Sunday the great weather continued and we had a nice saunter round Glen Rosa, as per the attached photos.

The highlight of the day was me not feeling sick on the bus by doing the first leg straight away. Time was irrelevant and surviving was the key on my first long race back. Went through the motions many times.
I think JD going by his own report was having a "mid race battle" which normally occurs when your "road running days of the 80's and 90's are behind you". You should also know better JD not to mention that word b***a. Its a yellow card for you I'm afraid !!!
Anyway my report was on the first leg north.Very hilly in sections with a 8% incline with 3 miles to go.Tried to keep Tommy Hearle and Central in sight and ran alongside with a runner from b***********n before Colin Miller and Kilmarnock caught us at 7 mile to go. Felt it tough on my return from injury but stuck in there anyway for 5th in a group finish.

Why are the words "Bella" and "Bellahouston" not allowed? I think they're a lovely club.

They are indeed a lovely club, full of lovely people, as many of our members will agree, won't they Mark?. However, as they objected to some remarks made about them last year at this race, we decided that, in order not to offend their sensitivities, we wouldn't mention them in our race reports.

John you look so cool in your shades in that photo. Can you contact me by e-mail for advice on your coolness please. Maybe that's what I am missing these days ?

Thanks to Clydesdale for the clarification. It's good to see that the misunderstanding at the start didn't spoil their day out.

Ah OK. I was wondering if it was some sort of jealously as they seem to get a lot of prizes (the girls especially)
