Maddy Moss Mash

No race reports yet? I imagine eveyone deleted the email I sent

them with instructions on how to get into the admin to write a

report! Oh well, seeing as I know how to do it, I may as well

share my response to this very enjoyable Bog and Burn race with you all.

Headline: Steffen ran a blinder to cap the best week of hill running in

his entire life; he beat Chris for the third time in a week... yes that's

three hill races in a week and Gorgas gubbed Upson in all of them! (And

almost as shocking, Pete Baxter beat myself.. no hang on, there's

nothing actually shocking about that...).

The conditions were perfect: cool, slight breeze and very dry

underfoot. John was feeling a bit cold as he approached the

summit of Ben Cleuch, so he put on his full body cover. Nevertheless,

he managed a good, solid run (as usual) to finish fourth Westie behind

the afore-mentioned duo and first big W

David Riach.

I'm gesssing that fifth Westie in was probably new member Martin Reid,

who must get round to buying a Westies vest soon,

or no bugger is going to know who he is at races.

After a decent climb by myself (I actually overtook Martin before the

main summit) I hobbled back along the narrow path, where Dave

C (and several others) managed to get past my jutting-out elbows

(albeit eventually in Dave's case: his first

attempt at a sly-overtaking-maneouvre almost ended in trouble, when he

slipped and almost took himself out. His recovery was impressive

though).

Hamilton tailed Dave for most of the climb apparently, but the descent

proved to be too much for the Glasgow Osteopath ,

and he trundled over the finish line a couple of minutes behind myself.

Perhaps Katherine or Catriona can add something to the report from their perspective, as I haven't the foggiest how they got on.

Drew, back from a minor quad injury in the very same Ochil hills, brought home the Westies contingent.

Results to follow at the SHR site.

Yes, a cracking race, my 7th MMM and slowest yet in 64m 34s, though I felt like I was going as fast as ever. Don't really know how I managed 57m 30s in 1999 - must have been an imposter! I managed to avoid the early detour that many sheep took and gained a good advantage for at least a minute or two before the slog up The Law beckoned. I reckoned I hit Ben Cleuch @ 37m and managed to only get overtaken by about two on the way down, which wasn't bad for me. The Woolpack was the post-race swally venue, except for Chris who disappeared to the chippy, leaving Steffen and Blair to think he had deserted them in a huff at getting Steffened yet again. No Westies won prizes which was unusual but we all enjoyed it, didn't we Chris?!

Thanks Blair. I promise I'll get a vest as soon as someone tells me where I can get one!
