Goatfell 2005

What? No race report yet? I dandered up the hill with a work chum to watch this classic race, which took place in dry and pretty sunny conditions. Once again, B*********** Road Runners looked impressive with their first 4 lying in the top 15 at the summit. What are we doing to meet their challenge? ( Then again, how many Bella Boys & Gals were doing the Boat Race?) Anyway, I'll leave the race report to others, such as Steff. I'll merely add the photo's.

Wonderful weather for Arran's Goatfell 2005. The usual start, leave the house as late as possible, race down the M8 at a 100 miles only to get stuck behind a 30-mile-an-hour-granny soon after leaving the A737 dual carriageway. Am getting extremely irritated - the Goat fell team trophy in the trunk! Then I realise that I totally had forgotten which way to take. Panic sets in. But a bit of good guessing leads me to the first sign for the ferry. Phew. And you think hill racing is stressful! I race onto the ferry to meet the usual suspects (surprisingly DT was missing, probably on gardening duty). Lovely sunshine. The race itself sets off in similar fashion to my road journey - too fast for my own good. God only knows who I was thinking I was. BM??? Manage to keep up the pace for a little while only to revert back to a more appropriate speed as soon as the climbing starts. Wise words from passing Father McLoone: "Keep it steady, Steffen" only highlight my folly. After the front pack had disappeared into the lofty distance I found myself pretty much on my own, but second lady (BH) slowly but surely approaching. Oh my god! Thanks to Dave for his encouraging words at the top. The descent is pretty eventless, I take two and am taken by two others. Back on the road some kids visibly enjoy remarking that I am being caught up rapidly. Oh no. There was nothing left in the legs, despite all the track sessions (2). Last bend in the road - I am almost there - when young and confident looking 2nd lady decides to attack. First thought: Bugger, but nothing I can do! Second Thought: Oh no! Third thought: No way! When we enter the park - I am only a meter in front - the crowd begins to chant: "Common Helen, you can do it", and so forth. You can imagine what this can do to even the most tired legs! Refreshments and price giving was moved outside to the park to make the most of the glorious weather. A couple of Arran Sunsets in the beer garden create a fine highlight to a great day out.

Thanks for doing a report Steffen. I'd better say that 'twas not me hot on Steffen's heels. Wish I was that fast. Goatfell race day is always a good day out. We were all kitted out with full body cover to ward off the torrential rain storms experienced in previous days. Instead we had to deal with sunburn and dehydration. Least said about my run the better; only consolation was passing three women and one guy on the way down so I wasn't just as close to the back as I might have been. Well done to all those who ran; to Gibby for his M60 prize and Chris M for her 2nd FV40. Thanks to all the supporters, too - especially Dave and his walking pal at the top and my 2 long-suffering daughters!

Positive that I had filled in the entry form as a Westie, I donned the Gold with pride (nothing to do with the fact that I lost my only Glenpark vest a fortnight ago). As the race got under way I was stunned by the speed of Gibby and Steffen at the start as they disappeared into the distance, I was beginning to think the pressure of running for the 3rd best hill running club in Glasgow was getting to me. But I persevered and eventually got into a respectable position (in front of the 1st woman)- but only just. Descended like a coo (as usual) but surprisingly managed to hold my position to the end. The prize-giving seemed to take forever to get started so made a quick exit to the pub for cold pints of Cider in the warm sun

Hey, if Westies are only 3rd then feel free to join the SHIT's or Bella-Who-cares. It's not the taking part but the Losing that counts !!

Hey, why not join the best club in Glasgow and Scotland called Shettleston Harriers and still descend like a coo like myself ???
