Renfrew Ferry run
"One of the great river crossings of the world", as stated by a big brown boggie a few years ago, was enough to stir ten westies to sample this traditional route again and so we headed down Yoker way in the balmy evening air. Cutting through the leafy avenues of Knightswood, we soon came to the picturesque village of Yoker and the lapping waters edge of the mighty Clyde to bid the ferryman from the other bank. Spying ten fair travellers to increase his coffers (well the council's actually) he was soon across and a friendly chap he was indeed, even educating the oxygen starved group on how to purchase tickets from the common sense machine. A high moon now lit the chocolate brown waters and with not a body or trolley to be seen, we alighted at the trading post of Renfrew.
Returning to the hoof, the dark country lanes were only lit by the distant glow of Braehead which enticed us forward and once there we had to fight off the entrancing lure of such giants as Sainsburys, B&Q and the mammoth IKEA. Resist we did but no fear was necessary as mighty Grimmor was at the fore, lighting the way with his bright yellow fleece bonnet (he must have been melting). Oh dear what's that smell, John Donnelly is at it again - on no, forgot, it's just the sweet fragrance of the Sheildhall sewage plant wafting by. Cap'n Chas off the back, he watched the others stride away but did his best to follow the compass that is Struthers guide the fellows through the Southern General's grounds. Too late they were gone and now the delights of the tunnel back under the Clyde, slight trepidation mounting for the solitary westie with digi camera in bag. The dozen Nedettes (lassies) shouted "You're a bit slow" but into the tunnel and their counterpart neds took one look at the fatboy and decided No Go. For even being full of Frosty Jack as they were, the six of them realised, stop this juggernaut if you dare. Camera was safe but gravity over, the wheels came off in the belly of the Clyde and... ...and well it was a bloody long walk back to Anniesland!!
