Scottish National Cross Country Champs Irvine

Full witty report to follow from Dave, who had a good run incidently, but I'll just state brief facts. A bright and windy day at Irvine with what looked like a good undulating course and at least two steep little climbs. Collette Fagan was in a class of her own as she ran away to win the ladies title and there was a great battle in the mens where Jethro, Donald, and Robert swapped the lead but Robert Russell claimed victory in the end. A fairly good turnout of Westies men but what about the wummin!!

Say what you will about Irvine, the Beach Park and SAL, but the National is a classic event. The race itself is a great leveller and really shows you how good you are. Basically, if you can't finish a National, then you ain't a real runner ( true, Marcus?). Then of course there's the Beach Park. The weather in Charlie's photo's makes it look idyllic(apart from the glass factory and the rest of the industrial estate in the background). However, as usual, the gale coming across from the sea added at least 3 minutes onto everyone's time. Finally there is the course itself. It looks deceptively like pleasant, flat and fast parkland, but these wee undulations do start to take their toll on the second and third laps, and there's something quite unique and ingenious about having on each lap a 200yard(180 metres for anyone under 35)energy-sapping burst along the sand followed in quick succession by two nausea-inducing climbs up the dunes. All of that to be done twice by the wummin, three times by the men, and only once by poor Marcus! Stick to the hill running, young man!Talking about nausea induction brings us onto the Women's race. Despite arriving late and not warming up properly, Catriona looked to have a great run and was being applauded all round by the lads before she admitted that she really could have tried a bit harder. WELL CATRIONA....there's no excuse; there was a trotter withing bagging distance and it was your duty to get her scalp.Talking about nausea aloso brings us neatly onto the Trotters, who won the men's team event. I suppose it would have caused more nausea if it had been won by some of the other clubs we all know and love, not least that small-to-medium club on the south side of the...........no, we won't go there, will we?A shortish distance( no more than a mile) behind Robert, Jethro and Donald was Chris, looking pretty fit after his recent ropey finishes. Dave was pretty chuffed at keeping Chris in his sights for the first couple of laps and finished strongly with his signature sprint, catching a Trotter right on the line (Catriona, take note). Before the race, Gibbie was confident of gubbing Dave, but ended up settling for a victory over Don, who had obviously overextended himself by running too fast on Wednesday night's 3-mile sprint. Behind Don came Hamilton and John D( who explains that he wasn't trying because he couldn't move his legs fast enough; so there you have it). Blair's run was disappointing after his early season form, Grimmorr's run was disappointing because he wasn't wearing his black tights and Drew's finish was diappointing because he let Trotter Nixon catch him just before the finish. However, all-in-all it was a good Westies turnout.I arrived too late to see the young folks races; maybe someone can add a report on these. Does anyone have a full set of results yet? If so, can you attach Westies names, times and positions?

And finally....more news about the renegade Westies attending the Trotter Annual Dinner last night. It turns out that the culprits were Big Al and Isabel, with the former billed as the guest speaker. If ever there was anything designed to induce nausea, it would be having to turn up at a Trotter function hours after they had won the Nationals, so hell mend both of them. Apparently some of the newer Trotters got the wrong end of the stick when the guest speaker was announced as Alasdair Campbell. They assumed it was going to be the foul-mouthed, bullish, devious, back-stabbing reprobate who acted until recently as Tony Blair's Spin Doctor. Well, on some aspects anyway they wouldn't be too disappointed. So, Al and Isabel, we expect a full explanation and account of the evening's proceedings!
