Pants to Don 'Clark Kent" Reid as Superman Freer Takes Title
A record turnout of 23 runners at Carbeth saw Andy Freer turn the tables on his last place in 2003 to triumph in his first race of the winter, over 2 minutes ahead of 2nd place Liz. Conditions were ideal, damp and windy with plenty of mud and clearly these suited F** B****** Freer, who has obviously been in training since October with this race in mind.. There were a number of other notable highlights, including:
• Atrocious marking of the first half of the course (white toilet paper cunningly camouflaged against the snow, contributing to accusations of cheating against Ian and Muffy). The lack of marking also resulted in Fraser going off-trail within a couple of minutes of the start. Marcus was involved in setting the trail…..need I say more?
• Excellent fancy dress by Don, who looked just swell with his underpants over his tights. Drew “Santa” Turnbull certainly knows how to swing his bauble.
• Marcus manages to complete the course without visiting the Beech Tree this year; this accounts for his pb!
• Jon Slowe sets the fastest time, with 18:06; Marcus is 20 seconds slower, whilst Roderick Fleming gubs his father with 18:45. Whatever happened to scratch man Chris; his 19:05 was probably his worst run this season? No jetlag to blame this time either.
• As usual, there are always a few individuals who turn out at the last moment. At least Liz had an excuse as she only left Carlisle after 10:30, but you’d expect Ian Struthers to know better.
• An excellent tussle developed between Blair ‘Haddie’ Millen and Dave ‘Shark’ Calder, as they spent the first 30 seconds groping each others fins. Dave slithered away to trounce Blair by over 30 seconds. Has Blair reached his quota for the season?
• A surprising number of first winter outings , including Andy, Graham Benny, Muffy, Hon. Big Al, Archibald Cameron of Glendale and Fraser Dalziel.
• A fair number of pb’s counting towards Winter League bonus points, including Andy, Ian, Drew, Helen, Liz, Dave, Gibbie and Mark. Let me know any additions or corrections, please.
• Finally, thanks as usual to the groupies and officials, including Isobel, Donald, Sandy McNeil, Millie, Karen, Margaret, Charlie, Victoria.. and last and not least, John Donnelly, whose award presenting skills can properly be compared to Mick Fleetwood and Samantha Fox.
Results (H’Cap Position, name, H’Cap Time, Real Position, Real Time)1 Andy, 27:32, 23, 27:32 2 Liz, 29:51,12, 22:513 Pat, 30:16, 23, 28:164 Ian, 30:21,19, 25:515 Dave, 30:34, 7, 19:346 Muffy, 30:39, 13, 23:097 Nathan, 30:53, 5, 19:288 Graham, 31:07, 21, 27:079 Blair, 31:10, 9, 20:1010 Stuart, 31:13, 6, 19:2811 Rod, 31:15, 3, 18:4512 Drew, 31:31, 17, 24:3113 Helen, 31:26, 18, 25:1114 Hon.
