Old (Jet) Lag Chris Flies In Ahead of Schedule.

An excellent turnout at the West Districts saw Chris having an astounding (or crazy)performance, considering that he had left Pusan less than 48 hours previously and had only arrived back in Glasgow about 16 hours beforehand, having travelled via Seoul and Amsterdam. Well, it could only be Chris, couldn't it. Wonder what race he is running today? It was a classic cross-country course in Kirkie, with plenty of mud and hills in dreich conditions. Don re-established himself in the usual Westies pecking order, not far behind Chris, but ahead of Gibbie, with newcomer Stuart Gough finishing 1 place behind the latter. Unfortunately, Stuart was running with another club's number, therefore his position didn't count for Westies team points, critically reducing us from our rightful 14th place down to 15th!Not far behind came Hamilton, with a strong 3rd lap. But shock of the day came when Blair "Haddie" Millen triumphed over Dave, who looked remarkably like a fish out of water and a bit rough around the gills. Still, Dave vows to get revenge at the next outing, which is the Christmas Handicap.Next in was Graeme, who wondered whether by running alongside a guy called Gerry, did this make him a Pacemaker? Ian and Drew followed behind, the latter complaining that there was no-one in to encourage him at the finish; mutters from the rest of the team about being too cold and wet did seem a little feeble.Although only 15th in the overall team points, Westies did finish a creditable 7th in the vets team contest, with Chris, Don and Gibbie all counting.

The turnout of 5 Westies wimmin in the senior event must be a record for this season . New member Catriona established herself as the woman to watch, finishing very strongly ( and looking as if it was effortless into the bargain). Great packing by the women saw them all ending up within 7 places, with Ana, Liz, Gillian and Helen finishing in that order. Who knows how Gillian and Helen would have got on had they stopped gabbing during the race, but when they did do, about 200 metres before the finish, Gillian's burst of speed was a touch of class. The women came in 7th in the team event. Also running were Cameron and Steven in the U13 Boys and Victoria in the U15 girls, although her finish has mysteriously disappeared from the results. Maybe Victoria can write us an account of both these races?
