EK 10K
This was another typically cold, dreich, grey, winters day in EK, (much like a summers day in EK!) for the annual Hugh Wilson 10K. The organisers were a bit vague about the length of the course, (the running track was out of use), and most people I spoke to had PB'S but who knows? Anyway, Westies were a bit thin on the ground, with only 6 official entries and one unofficial, (Victoria, who at 14 was too young to enter under SAL rules, but was keen to bag her first 10K and get those vital points!). The big grudge match between Blair and Dave never materialised, because Dave and Muffy decided instead to go to Amsterdam for a short cultural break, (thats a dirty weekend to you and I!).
Anyway, back to what happened in the race. Well, Chris U disappeared en route to a sub 36 PB. Don't know how Blair got on, but I'm sure he would be pleased to avoid a head to head with Dave!
Liz, Iain and Drew were locked in their own personal battle, with Liz gradually drawing away from Iain and Drew. Iain, i think eventually pulled away from Drew, who looked lke at ne point Victoria and I might catch, but after 5k, Drew's strength and experience paid off, and we eventually lost sight of him. Victoria finally finished with a time of 51.57, which she was well pleased with, and is already looking forward to her next 10k!
times to follow, see you all at the west districts,
cheers,
Don.

Yes Don, I reckon the course was probably slightly short... but I'm not complaining as I ran round in 40.04!

Ha! That's Don's cunning ploy to stop me getting my bonus points! I reckon the course was about 100m short on the final km, but my time was still over 2 minutes faster than my previous 10k time.

Interesting that Chris's time this year is identical to Brian Bonnyman's time in 2002. Of course, Brian's time is for the full course. Sorry Chris, you cannae get pb bonus points for the East Kilbride 9,900Metres.....unless you ran faster than your previous pb for 9,900metres!I can understand Blair's lack of motivation holding him back during the race. However else can he explain his time???

Nobody has suggested it is 9,900m. I only said I thought the final km was short. I have no idea what length any of the other kilometres were.

Who knows then. Tommy is definitely not running 30min for a 10 k just now.

I have calculated that it was 4.85% shorter than last year based on the averaged improved performance of the first five runners who did both. Which would make it 9,515m if last year's route was exactly 10k.

Perhaps we could contact NASA to survey the course from outerspace.

Having just surveyed the EK 10?k course using the latest satellite photography and topographical imaging, we can concur with Mr Upson's findings of a course distance of 9515 metres, + or - 2cm. We therefore conclude that he did not run a pb for 10k and will not be getting those extra points in the Winter League - Tough luck and try again next time!!

I was planning on running the Langdale 10k on December 19th but have just heard that it is in fact only 9,998.7 metres. Och well. I guess there will be other races.
