Carnethy website: SAL

The following message has also been posted on the Carnethy BB:

From Anne's headlines on the front page of this (Carnethy) website, regarding SAL's proposal to drop hillrunning, it seems that the only outcome for hillrunning is disaster. This, of course, does not have to be the case. There would be no immiediate impact on "elite" athletes. Further to this, why should there be no other body of people capable of administering funds? If SAL gets funding for hill running (that was certainly the case previously) and they expel hillruning as a discipline, then the money should be made available elsewhere. All those over 18 have the vote and should lobby MPs, MSPs and anyone else who might be brought into the fray to gain funding.

Worse still, we have the implication that the "heather roots" runners might suffer. Why would this be the case? Have Carnethy suddenly started taking out SAL "permits" for all their races? I think not. Neither have, according to SAL, 50% of hill races in Scotland. Also, what do people think happened before SAL or even SAF was invented? That's right, folk up and down the country had races on hills.

So if SAL expel hillrunning from their remit, then people should continue as they do now. Go out running on the hills and enjoy your sport.

As far as I can see SAL or SAF affiliation make some of my races dearer than others. Apart from that it makes no difference to my running in the hills. In my opinion these are people who have no real interest in our sport. So why do we need them? There have been many discussions about the affiliations but nobody has yet come up with a single argument that could swing it for me. Somebody mentioned youth development? I guess the Reid offspring managed pretty well so far without SAL/SAF. Running in the hills is about freedom to go where you want. Organisations and public bodies don't help much. Their game is all about numbers and power, like the unions! SG

I agree totally with Steffen. However there will now be taxpayers' and lottery money which should have been allocatted to hillrunning going to other disciplines. Surely there is some mechanism to claim out rightful share as taxpayers (and probably some of us are daft enough to 'waste' money on the lottery. Should SHR now take on a greater role as an independent governing body in the same way as the orienteers do? Would that be too much to ask of a volunteer organisation who have thankfully kept things going in parallel (or in spite of the SAL) with the usually pathetic output from SAL? Do we need these dedicated volunteers to be financially compensated for increased efforts if they take up the funding challenge?
