DAAA Relay Championships

1984

Weather: like an old man's arsehole - cold wet and windy. Had wind with us on the way out and against us on the return journey. Course: very extreme, pilons and crampons as well as the usual spikes required. Reputedly 2.8 miles, measured by the wheel which probably got stuck going through the mud, but we reckoned it was nearer four. Hills were numerous ubiquitous and very steep either up and down. Underfoot the terrain was uneven and muddy in patches and the flat canal section was grossly unsuitable for spikes. However had you been fit it would have been a very good course, i.e. tough for opponents.

Apart from my own dismal description above, no comment, my head is hidden in abysmal shame. Donohue beat me, Logue beat me Calder beat me but ultra surprising mega star of the day hyper man Alex Blackley scrubbed not only me but the rest of the team! Watch out Sheridan, this is the man's 1st ever cross country race, 2nd ever real race. Marathons 3 hours and under don't count as races. I think I'll get drunk tonight with the Hares and Hounds. As I'm still second claim.

It was certainly a black Saturday as Hares and Hounds 'A' won!! and Hares and Hounds 'B' team beat westies 'A' team as well.

I don't understand how a circular course can be uphill all the way round! Sorry the tow path was flat but they arranged a headlong gale at that point.
