West Highland Way Relay-12th June 2004

Legs 1 & 2

I turned up at Milngavie for the 6am start, along with 2 S.H.I.T's, 3 Fifer's, 2 Trotters, 1 Carnethy and an EastKilbridonian. At least it was a beautiful morning. The 12 miles to Drymen was a bit of a slog, to be honest (1hr 27), but at least I didn't get lost, which is more than can be said for some of the others! Val took over for Leg 2 over Conic and up to Rowardennan and had a good run, looking as if she was enjoying herself. On this stage, one has to question the motives of the 2 S.H.I.T's who seemed to think it acceptable to run from Balmaha to Rowardennan along the road, rather then the WHW, thereby cutting about 15 minutes from their time! What was the point guys? If you had wanted to run on the roads, you could have done the Skye 1/2 marathon instead. Highlight of the stage was HBT's man arriving at Balmaha with the soles of his hand-made running shoes in his hand; they had become detached in a bog on Conic Hill.

Val handed over to Dave Rogers, whose main concern was whether he could last his stage to Inverarnan without any food.

Someone else can provide the answer, and also details of how the other legs went. Val, Muffy and I headed back to Glasgow for some much-deserved sleep.
