Jura Fell Race

29th May 2004

Misty conditions on the first three hills sent runners scattering in all directions. The lead runners went AWOL, allowing Tim Lenton to emerge at check 3 in pole position. A lead which he held until the end.

Ian Holmes (who'd got lost between checks 2 and 3) put in a phenomenal recovery effort, overtaking half the field to claw back 2nd position. It was with some surprise that I looked back to see him closing me down rapidly on the 2nd Pap, before he promptly vanishing off into the distance.

I struggled round best I could. Sore knee from previous weekend's Boat Race, plus cramp flashing through my legs from Corra Bheinn till the end didn't help much. I trailed round following Mark Shaw's Jura vest, hoping to catch him on the road, but the legs weren't co-operating. I realised I'd missed the 4-hour cut as I came into Craighouse village, so coasted to the line in 4:02:01 to the welcome relief of shade and sandwiches and endless of cups of tea.
